Football Season Concludes for Gulf Shores Dolphins
The 2010 football season has come to a close for the Gulf Shores High School Dolphins and they've seen many ups and downs this season. After starting the season 0-4, the Dolphins managed to win 4 of their final 6 games with victories over Saraland on 9/24, Piedmont on 10/7, Faith Academy on 10/22, and against Bayside Academy on 10/29. Gulf Shores went on to finish 1-5 in the division. The 2010 season saw Tyler Stargel make the move from defensive end to middle linebacker and as he adjusted to the position, he only got better. Now that he has the off-season to rest and study, Tyler will look forward to his senior season in 2011.

Gulf Shores Wins!
Gulf Shores High School downed upstart Saraland High School 47-13 on a rainy night at home to grab their first victory of 2010!
Baldwin football preview: Gulf Shores says, "let's play"
GULF SHORES, Alabama -- To take a week off or to not take a week off. That was the question facing the Gulf Shores football team during the last six-plus months.
The Dolphins couldn't find a week-five opponent and they look destined for a bye when last week a two-game contract for a home-and-home series was reached with Saraland.
"When we sat down as a staff and looked at it, we needed the off week to get some kids healthy; we've got some kids banged up," said Gulf Shores coach Mark Freeman. "But at same time, there's Saraland and we're close (in location).
"This time of year, it's really about playing. There was part of me that hated having an off week. I did everything I could do to find us a game five that would be manageable. After the five games we've been through, we needed a game that was local if we could find one."
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 tonight at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium.
Saraland (1-3) is a first-year 4A program coming off a 56-0 loss to powerhouse Thomasville. The Spartans' lone victory came the previous week, 31-27 against Monroe County.
"I think Saraland is an up-and-coming program that's going to be one of the top programs around five years from now," Freeman said. "To have an opportunity to start playing them home and away was really a no-brainer. It's worked out good for both of us."
Freeman said Saraland, which has no seniors, uses one- and two-back spread schemes on offense, and a 3-5 look on defense with lots of blitzing. The Spartan offense is led by Cody Robinson, who had three TD passes to Akeem Miller in the Monroe game, and running back Michael Murphy.
Gulf Shores (0-4) is coming off a heartbreaking, 24-16 overtime loss to No. 6 Vigor. Despite not picking up the win, Freeman felt it was his team's best performance of the season.
"We managed our game plan," Freeman said. "We went in wanting to run the ball and did. We had a guy (Alex Edwards) with around 99 yards against a much bigger, speedier team. To get a game where we had a chance to win it late, it felt perfect."
Now the Dolphins will have a chance to get back on the field and prove the Vigor performance was no fluke. And to Freeman, that's better than spending the evening at home.
"I think that it will be a great Friday night that both teams have a chance to win," he said. "Both teams have a chance to go in and get better, and compete on Friday night; and this time of year, that's what it's all about."

No. 3 Spanish Fort Toros hook Gulf Shores Dolphins 28-7
Rob Newhouse, September 04, 2010 12:41 a.m.
GULF SHORES — Quarterback Joel Poe passed and ran for a pair of touchdowns to lead No. 3 Spanish Fort to a 28-7 win over Gulf Shores on Friday night. But Toros coach Bryant Vincent wasn’t impressed after his team committed four turnovers and multiple penalties.
“We really need to show a lot of improvement if we expect to play well and give ourselves a chance against a very strong St. Paul’s team,” Vincent said.
Poe’s 48-yard run set up his 2-yard TD to cap Spanish Fort’s first scoring drive, then he connected with Troy Brown on a 30-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to make it 14-0.
The Dolphins answered with Brandon Silvers’ 36-yard TD pass to Brandon Davis, but Davares Ambroes’ 21-yard scoring run gave the Toros a 21-7 halftime lead. Ambroes capped the scoring with a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter.
The Toros (2-0, 1-0 5A Region 1) host St. Paul’s Friday at 7 p.m. Gulf Shores (0-2, 0-1) meets LeFlore at Ladd-Peebles Stadium Thursday at 7 p.m.
