GULF SHORES — Quarterback Joel Poe passed and ran for a pair of touchdowns to lead No. 3 Spanish Fort to a 28-7 win over Gulf Shores on Friday night.
But Toros coach Bryant Vincent wasn’t impressed after his team committed four turnovers and multiple penalties.
“We really need to show a lot of improvement if we expect to play well and give ourselves a chance against a very strong St. Paul’s team,” Vincent said.
Poe’s 48-yard run set up his 2-yard TD to cap Spanish Fort’s first scoring drive, then he connected with Troy Brown on a 30-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to make it 14-0.
The Dolphins answered with Brandon Silvers’ 36-yard TD pass to Brandon Davis, but Davares Ambroes’ 21-yard scoring run gave the Toros a 21-7 halftime lead. Ambroes capped the scoring with a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter.
The Toros (2-0, 1-0 5A Region 1) host St. Paul’s Friday at 7 p.m. Gulf Shores (0-2, 0-1) meets LeFlore at Ladd-Peebles Stadium Thursday at 7 p.m.
